Why is the media making such a big deal about the swine flu ?

We have only lost one person in Texas due to this flu. However, every year we lose thousands of people due to regular flu in the US. So why is the swine flu so important ? Why are we so afraid ? There must be other reasons why the media is focusing on the swine flu, alarming the people in the process, scaring the elderly unnecessarily and creating panic among the US population ? Maybe the media is trying to distract us from other problems going on in the US, like the high unemployment rate, tax increases and worsening stock market ?

    The media over exaggerates everything!
    The flu has indeed killed way more people,
    and the media wants to freak everyone out.
    They want this to become the next big epidemic.

    I’m tired of hearing about it.

    If Obama let rip a roaring **** in public and on TV, it would be the main news for a week and probably feature on the Oprah show, with panel discussions on every channel. They over exaggerate everything that is safe to do so. They remain very quiet though when it comes to war atrocities comitted by their own soldiers, but thats another topic.

    it appears that about 35,000 people die in the USA each year from common flu viruses.. There might be an over reaction to this one.. But we still need to thank the media for being there to report to us..

    In 1918-1919 a new Flu called Spanish Flu killed 30 million people in the world including several 100,000 Americans. Out breaks since then have sometimes killed over one million. Every 20 years of so a entirely new and deadly Flu appears.The world is over-due for one. Do you understand now?
